Hi,
103 or 103R + mass loaded SME headshell + 3012 or a 3009 + Seiki 1500 + hagerman opamp phono stage (good only with select parts and battery power) or an EAR 834 (with some mods) and some old...

this is the first time I've seen the schematic of the 834p. Explains a lot. I always thought it sounded foggy and rose tinted with limited dynamic range. There seems to be alot of feedback in there. Having said that I've never found any of ...

My stereo corrector (834P with air-vane caps) has a shorting switch across the two channels at the input. I suggest you incorporate the same. With it out of circuit I did indeed get that hum you refer to with the SPU Mono. Switching to short eliminate...

What would be good place to start? I am using custom built 834P and S&B 103s. Also, my tonearm is 9-inch SME M2, should I put some additional weight on it?Thank you....
|
The 834p is a tried and true circuit. It should be OK. If you have hum, I would suspect the step up transformers first and the power supply second. Maybe a ground lead is not attached?Take it completely out of the system, disconnect the phono leads, ...

Creative people often have inner demons and strange beliefs. I am one of the few exceptions to that according to myself. I will be careful never to praise another Baron Tim product to avoid confusing him that I am engaging in intellectual theft. Yes ...

I recently could not pass up a good deal on a EAR 834P MM, so I will have the opportunity to compare it to my current phono stage. It is funny since I had planned to listen to EAR phono stage in my system about 10-15 years ago when I lived in Santa M...
I have some ZVN0545A mosfets here for exactly that purpose of replacing cathode followers. You may like to try this starting at 2mA (250V supply, 125k biasing resistor).
Brian, and how do you find your MOSFET beha...

I have some ZVN0545A mosfets here for exactly that purpose of replacing cathode followers. You may like to try this starting at 2mA (250V supply, 125k biasing resistor). Did you or Dima try Soviet SSG silver-mica for the first coupler? I am using 0.1...

So I decided to try some of the mods mentioned to my semi-recent 834p w/ MC step-ups. It all started with C1 and C7...but then i got into RIAA, upgraded diodes and filter caps. Well, everything should be just stellar on paper but...now I have a hum t...

thanks for your replies. Paul is quite right. I'm not new to audio forums and know better than to post such an unfocussed question with no background. It was a combination of being impressed with the immediacy, detail, and scale of my friend's system...

The 834P is a wonderful phonostage. Find the Thorsten’s Modification Guide: http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.pl?forum=vinyl&n=108318 or just build one yourself. The 834PT delivers very-very good results, particularly with the punchy “cartrid...

A friend has a fixed headshell model S2 and is about to trade for a detachable just for convenience but worries if there is any extra sonic merit in the model he already has?Any idea Mr B____p.s. Romy, I've got my 901 and I'm very much impr...
any chance of a similar climb down on the 'adequate but not exceptional' 834P?
Not really. The 834PT still holds ground and the more I hear different phonostages the more firmly it does. I can’t tell you if it is due...

I'm a phono moron, but having had several phono preamps, I think I can understand what finds Romy right in the EAR 834P, which I love. I'm not as skilled and crazy as to try to make all the Thorsten mods in it by myself, but I've tried some tube swap...

The 834P was a revelation for me, being a circuit that I would have dismissed as "old hat" (Feedback? 12AX7 cathode follower? Do me a favour!). I like it so much that I intend to build an "enhanced" copy a la Thorsten/Carsten for reference (and enjoy...

Interesting, How much is what your appreciate in the SPU sound derives from the SPU’s high output. When we load out typical 60-65++ dB gain phonostages with high output 2-3mV cartridges then Sound is way more interesting. I would not speculate if th...

Something to look forward to in '05 then? :)
Got to do something about mine, the borrowed 834P goes back the end of January...

Hi Romy,I haven't measured anything I was just looking at the data sheet for the valve. I was hoping someone could explain to me how a device with that much distortion could be any good. I am quite interested to build a pair of these amplifiers to se...

I think you must be referring to the T version with built-in step-up Romy. Current production SPUs have a quoted sensitivity ...

Hi Romy, I don't doubt for a moment that there are plenty of people 'who know' who will wax lyrical about the benefits of open loop eq in feedback circuits. There are people 'who know' who will tell me that valve amplifiers cannot be as good as trans...

Hi Alex,I am sorry, what you claim can not be. No cap is going to separate bass instruments better. The brilliance of the 834p circuit is that the EQ also uses the miller capacitance of the tubes in a very brilliant way. The power supply caps are very...

I guess Thorsten is laughing since he should be the main receiver of TdP email. Popularity of a product is a double bladed sword. I do hope that sales of EAR 834 phono stage increased notably after Romy decided to make that circuit into his "end of ...
I am a owner of an ET SU-1 and would like to know what phono stage would go best with it. Would a Lamm LP2 be a good match? Will be using a Dynavector XV1s with it. Thanks in advance
It is truly an interesting question....

Paul, in my view the air-caps as an ultimate cap, the ultimate by own intrinsic topology. It is particularly the case for the 834P- like application as in there the cap is not biased by high voltage DC and gets constantly re-polarized. You see the pr...
Do you mean a battery bias , Brian ? We didn't try it because of 1 V bias voltage - I don't know if the battery with this voltage does exist . I know only 1,5 V and 1,2 V cells ...... maybe using some chemical reactions we can ob...
So you do not recommend the stock tubes? Is it a specific change you recommend?
Better tubes will certainly give you better sound, in many cases more sophisticated sound. I do not know what tubes EAR uses as stock tubes ...

Experimenting with Decca carts, I've temporaly disconected the SUT's and decided to check the RIAA calibrationand I think I have some (circuit?) problem.
In the end of everything I was able to get very nice response. The...

Well, maybe a little cussing first to set the tone. The older SPU's are now well sought after, many will end up in collections at now over inflated prices probably in the Far-East where they are worshipped. I've heard a few older SPU's and even those...
